Pick any two

Pondering the nature of professional jobs this afternoon, and the relative sizes of people's offices, I observed the Money - Space - Time triangle. It perfectly characterises staff benefits by job role:
  • Engineers get Money and Time, but no Space.
Evidence: senior technologists in computer companies have smaller offices than my supervisor.
  • Executives get Money and Space, but no Time.
Evidence: the large number of businesspeople on the District Line checking their Blackberries at 9pm.
  • Academics get Time and Space, but no Money.
Evidence: "Everybody knows" that all academics are poor.
